WhatsApp messages from the “GU Conservatives & Unionists Members Chat” of the Glasgow University Conservative & Unionist Association (UofG Tories) have been leaked.
The messages show the Secretary wrote, “If Starmer resigns, next in line is Shabana Mahmood. A Pakistani, the worst of the species.”
Further messages write, “Not sure that’s a clever remark to post ???” “Yes, that’s definitely against everything we stand for.”
The Secretary replied, “Lapse of judgement. Won’t happen again.” Hillhead Review understands that the message was deleted within minutes of publication.
Following the leak of the message, the former Secretary was removed from his committee position with immediate effect.
The UofG Tories told Hillhead Review; “On Monday, a member of our committee posted a racist and derogatory comment in our society group chat. Although the member immediately deleted it, the GUCUA committee has a zero tolerance approach to these matters and has taken swift action.
“The member was told to immediately resign and has duly done so.
“As is clear from these actions and the reactions of others in the group chat, GUCUA does not, and will never stand for discriminatory remarks.”
The UofG Tories are not affiliated with the Student Representative Council (SRC), despite several attempts this academic year.
Hillhead Review understands that several members of the Divestment Coalition have reported the former Secretary to the University and the SRC.
The University of Glasgow has been contacted for comment.
