Protesters acting as part of Glasgow University Justice for Palestine have shut down University Avenue as part of a protest against the University’s investments in arms companies.
At midday, protestors gathered downstairs in the James McCune Learning Centre in defiance of the University’s investment of arms. The protestors led the chant “In Palestine we start a war”, as they blocked off escalators, moving up and down between the ground and first floors.
Shortly after pressure from security, protestors moved outside to University Avenue. Now, they sit in the street blocking cars and buses from either side.
Police have blocked the bottom of University Avenue, not allowing traffic to enter from Byres Road. Students have overheard threats to “shut the uni down” if conditions are not met.
This comes after protestors left the sit-in at the Charles Wilson Building after a meeting with Duncan David was promised.
Hillhead Review can reveal that four more students have joined the hunger strike.
The Univeristy’s SafeZone app has urged students to avoid University Avenue in light of the protest. Updates from the app claim that security is attempting to speak with the protestors.
Currently, no arrests have taken place.
The protest ended at roughly 4pm, with the protesters marching to Kelvingrove Park and University Avenue reopening to traffic shortly after.
