The University of Glasgow branch of Unite the Union (Unite UofG) took to Instagram to share their vote to strike next year.
They claim it was the “highest ever statutory ballot turnout”, with 63% of members taking part. Of those, 94% voted in favour of industrial action.
The exact dates or extent of the strike action by Unite UofG is currently unclear.
Unite UofG is currently the largest staff union at the University of Glasgow. The trade union represents technicians, administrative staff, cleaners, and more.
It is currently unclear the impact this decision will have on the student body.
The University and College Union (UCU), who represent academic and teaching staff, currently have an open ballot on potential strike action, with a decision expected imminently.
Alongside the UCU and Unite UofG, multiple trade unions including the Educational Institute of Scotland and Unison shared a joint statement calling the 1.4% pay rise offer from the University a “joke.”
Unite last took industrial action for two days in September 2023. They did not take part in the UCU’s industrial action in February and March 2023.
The UCU’s marking boycott in the same year meant that over 600 students graduated from the University with an unclassified degree.
The University of Glasgow and Unite University of Glasgow have been contacted for comment.
