Early this morning, Glasgow University Justice for Palestine Society assembled outside of the Charles Wilson building, renamed the Dar Ahmad Manasra, to demand that the University Glasgow end its involvement in Israel’s occupation and blockade of Palestine.
This marks the society’s first on-campus protest this year.
Students with lectures scheduled to take place in this building were informed by email, shortly after protestors convened, that they would be cancelled.
Protestors hold homemade painted banners reading ‘UofG invests £19.9m in genocide’ and ‘shut it down 4 Palestine’.
In images taken by Hillhead Review, the word ‘DIVEST’ appears to have been painted onto the Charles Wilson doors.
In their own words, a speaker has said ‘We the students from Glasgow University are here today blocking the entrance to the Charles Wilson building which was reclaimed last year as Dar Ahmad Manasra, we are here today as court will be meeting on 11th February and divesting for genocide.
‘They will continue to ignore the voices of their students in speaking up for over two years.’
GUJPS has outlined five demands from the University:
- Divestment
- Sever research ties with Arms Companies
- Academic boycott of the ‘Zionist Entity’
- Financial reparation
- No punishment placed on student protestors
These demands have been outlined and reiterated on the GUJPS Instagram page this morning.
While having five demands, this protest specifically targets Glasgow University’s divestment of £194,542 from BAE Systems.
GUJPS plan to remain blocking the building ‘all day’ and encourage students to ‘come and chat’ and ‘show your support’.
