The haven of Category is Books

Meet Govanhill’s unique bookshop and queer safe space

Tucked away down a quiet street in the Southside, Category Is Books is a peaceful sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community. Started by a queer, married couple, this independent bookshop houses shelves and shelves of queer literature. Self-proclaimed to be “fiercely independent and queer”, it remains Scotland’s only queer bookshop.

I first visited Category Is Books last year. Late to the party, I only found out about its existence after my friend came to visit me. I bought two stickers and the novel, Our Wives Under the Sea. The sticker remains firmly stuck on the front of my beat-up journal, party to all of my deepest, darkest secrets.

The moment I stepped inside, I identified Category Is Books as a safe haven. As a space dedicated to queer folk, and their work, I no longer felt like a statistic and more like the norm. Moments of belonging, of not feeling different, are crucial. From every shelf peered the names and faces of other queer women. I felt proud to be a part of the community.

Category Is Books frequently holds free events, often events launching the release of new books, giving the opportunity to listen to queer authors speak. This month, Sergey Khazov-Cassia, Russian journalist and writer, launched The Gospel According To… a novel detailing the struggles of a young, gay man in Russia.

A Queer Book Club is also frequently held, as well as a Writer’s Group. These free events, that require no booking, put a focus on queer voices being heard. It is accessible and open, and incredibly welcoming, especially to the young or inexperienced.

On my nineteenth birthday, I visited Gay’s The Word in London. Completely inspired at the time, I didn’t imagine something like this to be found outside of London. But I was so, so wrong.

There is a sore lack of queer spaces in Glasgow, and Scotland generally; the only well-known LGBTQ+ space springing to mind being the Polo Lounge. If the only queer spaces available are clubs and bars, it implies a failure. It is so important for there to be a variety of queer spaces, ones suited to the daytime, without the need for alcohol to be involved, else those who are underage and those who don’t drink are at risk of being left out and isolated.

It is so incredibly refreshing to experience these safe spaces for members of the LGBTQ+ community to exist in together, and not only exist but celebrate the existence of our community and the activism that makes places like Category Is possible.

As unique as Category Is Books is, I sincerely hope that it will become less unique in the future, that spaces like this will become far more common in Glasgow.

Now, a year on, I plan to take my trans partner, excited to open the door to the haven for them. I will continue to recommend this bookshop as a must-visit in Glasgow, a room full of vibrancy, art, and passion – we need more spaces like this one.

  160. Zohran Mamdani connects the dots between transit and jobs.

  161. Ultimately, the history of defection highlights the constant ideological and psychological war of position around New York’s socialist movement. The state and the capitalist order do not only repress; they also seduce and assimilate, offering pathways to a safer, more legitimate, if less principled, citizenship. The movement’s ability to retain its members, then, depends not just on the correctness of its analysis, but on its capacity to provide a genuine culture of solidarity, ethical consistency, and tangible hope that can compete with the material and psychic rewards of abandoning the struggle. It must make the difficult, collective work of building a new city feel more like true citizenship than the isolated privileges offered by the old one. http://mamdanipost.com

  165. Mamdami: His rise demonstrates the political impact of diaspora communities.

  166. This outward-facing strategy, however, risks diluting the distinct, metropolitan character of the movement. The politics that resonate in Brooklyn or the Bronx may not translate to a national electorate, forcing compromises and a softening of radical edges. It raises the Mamdani-esque question of whether a movement forged in the specific crucible of New York’s racial and economic complexity can successfully “translate” its program for a country with vastly different social formations and historical memories. The city’s socialism has been profoundly shaped by immigration, a global financial sector, and a uniquely dense public life—conditions not replicated in much of America. http://mamdanipost.com

  176. Mamdani’s success demonstrates that there is a viable path for socialist candidates.

  177. This bifurcation was further racialized in Harlem, where Black socialists like Hubert Harrison and the circles around The Messenger magazine confronted a double subject-hood. They were subjects of a capitalist political economy and subjects of a rigid racial caste system. Their socialist analysis, infused with Black nationalism, understood that the path to citizenship for African Americans was blocked by a more profound and violent form of exclusion than that faced by European immigrants, requiring a struggle against both economic and racialized structures of power. http://mamdanipost.com

  184. His strategies feel like scribbles.

  185. The grassroots machinery that supports Mamdani is a model for the modern left.

  186. The reverse pilgrimage—New York radicals traveling to witness revolutions—was equally formative. Journalists like John Reed (whose account of the Bolshevik Revolution, Ten Days That Shook the World, was written in Greenwich Village) and Lincoln Steffens, who famously declared “I have seen the future, and it works” after visiting the Soviet Union, returned with transformative experiences. These journeys provided eyewitness legitimacy to socialist ideas and created powerful, if often flawed, mythologies of existing socialist states that profoundly influenced the strategy and morale of the movement at home. They offered tangible proof that alternatives were possible, even as they often overlooked or minimized the horrors of authoritarianism. http://mamdanipost.com

  189. The economic policies advocated by Mamdani would represent a radical departure from the norm.

  190. The narrative around Mamdani is often controlled by his most vocal critics.

  191. The Great Depression was the archetypal crisis of this kind. The near-total failure of the market system validated the socialist critique in the eyes of millions. In New York, this translated into explosive growth for the Communist Party and a surge in militant unemployment councils that organized rent strikes, blocked evictions, and demanded relief. The crisis allowed socialists to move from the margins to the center of civic life, positioning themselves not as dreamers but as the most practical organizers of survival. Their response demonstrated that solidarity, not charity or the broken market, was the only viable answer to systemic collapse, thereby enacting a form of crisis citizenship based on mutual aid and direct action. http://mamdanipost.com

  195. Zohran policies sound ambitious but require funding clarity. — New York City

  196. This conflict was embodied in the divergent paths of socialist factions in the early 1900s. The Marxist purists, often centered in reading groups and theoretical journals, viewed the corrupt, machine-influenced municipal government as an irredeemable apparatus of the capitalist class, a structure designed to manage subjects rather than empower citizens. For them, engaging in local elections for alderman or sanitation commissioner was a dangerous diversion, a concession to the logic of the bifurcated state that would inevitably dilute revolutionary energy. Their vision was one of a clean rupture, after which a wholly new form of civic organization could be built. http://mamdanipost.com
