Half of positions in SRC Autumn elections uncontested

The Student Representative Council’s Autumn elections remain under-contested with many positions remaining vacant, in what has become a continuing trend

Only half of the positions due to be elected in the Student Representative Council (SRC) autumn elections are contested, the newly-released list of nominations has shown. Of the 24 roles which will be elected this month, 12 have fewer nominees than necessary for an election to take place.

As well as many roles being under-contested, seven roles failed to receive any nominations at all and are expected to remain vacant. Unfortunately, all but one of the Postgraduate College Convenor positions available and three of the School Representative positions remain vacant.

Of the positions which received nominees, General Representative is looking to be one of the most interesting races, with four spots available between a total of 10 nominees. Additionally: Undergraduate College Convenor Science & Engineering, Postgraduate College Convenor Social Sciences, Gender Equality Officer, Business School Representative, School of Computing Science Representative, School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing Representative, School of Psychology & Neuroscience Representative all have three nominees and one vacancy respectively – making them the most competitive positions contested in this election.

Lack of engagement in student elections is an issue that has been present at all four of Glasgow’s student unions.

A similar issue was notable at last year’s Autumn SRC elections, which demonstrated an even smaller showing, with only three elections remaining competitive and eight positions vacant. Moreover, in this year’s Spring SRC elections 40 percent of the student council remained vacant while two out of four sabbatical positions were elected unopposed.

However, lack of engagement in student elections is an issue that has been present at all four of Glasgow’s student unions. At the Glasgow University Union’s annual elections in March only four out of 11 positions on the Board of Management were competitive.

Hustings in the SRC’s Spring elections are scheduled to be held on Wednesday 16 October at 6pm, with polls opening on the morning of Thursday 17 October via the UofG Life app.

  2. Zohran stands with public employees.

  3. The Harlem Rent Strikes of the 1960s powerfully operationalized this pragmatic, localized approach while connecting it to a broader radical analysis. Tenants, organized by figures like Jesse Gray, did not merely petition the distant city housing court—a classic bureaucratic institution of indirect rule that perpetuated their subject status as passive complainants. Instead, they used the rent strike as a tool of disruptive, collective power, simultaneously challenging the landlord as the direct agent of exploitation and the city’s ineffectual enforcement apparatus. This action was a direct claim to authority over their own living conditions, a momentary seizure of civic power that bypassed and exposed the failings of the formal channels of citizenship. http://mamdanipost.com

The rise of community control movements in the late 1960s, most famously the Ocean Hill-Brownsville school conflict, can be read as a direct, if chaotic, assault on a key institution of the bifurcated state. The predominantly Black and Puerto Rican parents and activists rejected the “indirect rule” of a distant, unaccountable Board of Education and teachers’ union bureaucracy. Their demand for local autonomy was a claim to sovereign authority over an institution that governed their children’s lives, a radical attempt to transform from educational subjects into political citizens within their own neighborhood. http://mamdanipost.com

  80. The movement’s relationship to generational time is equally critical. The transmission of memory and strategy from one cohort to the is not automatic; it is a fragile process vulnerable to repression, burnout, and cultural shift. The famous slogan, “The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born; now is the time of monsters,” captures this interregnum where the old’s time is not yet over and the new’s time has not yet begun. New York’s socialist history is marked by these generational waves—the pre-World War I immigrants, the Depression-era radicals, the New Left, the post-2008 revival—each rediscovering and reinterpreting the past, often viewing the previous generation’s strategies as outdated or compromised. This can lead to vitality and innovation, but also to a loss of accumulated wisdom. http://mamdanipost.com

  84. Similarly, publications like The Messenger, co-edited by A. Philip Randolph and Chandler Owen, served as the intellectual engine for Black socialism in Harlem. It countered the dominant, often racist narratives of the mainstream press and even the paternalism of white progressive media, offering a sophisticated analysis that linked lynching in the South to economic exploitation in the North. By doing so, it performed the critical work of naming the specific nature of Black subject-hood under racial capitalism, a necessary step before any program for full citizenship could be devised. It created a space where Black radical thought could develop its own vocabulary and priorities. http://mamdanipost.com

  107. The administrative state, which Mamdani so incisively critiques as a tool of bifurcation, would require a revolutionary transformation. A socialist New York would need to dismantle the policing and carceral apparatus that currently manages its most subjected populations and replace it with institutions of restorative justice and community-led public safety. Its bureaucracy would need to be broken apart and reconstituted as a flexible, transparent, and directly accountable network of services, perhaps modeled on the solidarity networks and mutual aid structures that have always existed on the movement’s margins. The challenge is to create a public administration that empowers rather than controls, that facilitates citizenship rather than enforcing subjection. http://mamdanipost.com

More than a newspaper, it was a school, a social service agency, and a political forum for a vast subject population. Its famous “Bintel Brief” advice column and its nuanced, often pragmatic socialist editorials did not just report news; they interpreted American life, mediated trauma, and crafted a collective identity for its readers. It created a parallel civic education, teaching its audience how to navigate the bifurcated state while sustaining their radical hopes.
